The IP and Patents for Innovation and Career Pathways program is for upper-level undergraduate students or graduate students in STEM or Law considering careers in the patent and intellectual property fields and for entrepreneurs and inventors seeking new knowledge to support innovation.

LPE497: Basic Patent Process and Skills
A 1-credit course to help familiarize students with what a patent is and does, as well as raise awareness and provide examples of different career paths in the patent field. Course includes hands-on opportunities to research, review, draft, and prosecute patents. Career paths explored include a patent agent, patent attorney, and patent examiner. The course is offered in-person at University Park in Spring.
LPE497: IP for Future Entrepreneurs and Inventors
A 1-credit course to help familiarize students with intellectual property (patents vs. copyright vs. trade secrets) and why it matters for entrepreneurs, what is/is not patentable, and how the patent process works. Course includes hands-on opportunities to explore case studies, finding IP in real-world products, mapping the competitive landscape, and the patent process. The course is offered in-person at University Park in Fall.

Bootcamp
Apply for the IP & Patent Bootcamp, a 3 day in-person experiential learning opportunity. The Bootcamp, developed in collaboration with Harrity and Harrity LLC, a renowned D.C. patent law firm, provides practical experience and networking opportunities for students to explore “a day in the life” of a patent agent, patent attorney, and patent examiner while learning basic skills in patent drafting and prosecution.
