About

What is LPE?

The Penn State Law, Policy and Engineering (LPE) Initiative is a unique interdisciplinary educational and transdisciplinary research, engagement, and service program at the interface of law, policy and engineering. Initially launched as a collaboration between the College of Engineering, Penn State Law, and the School of International Affairs, LPE is currently housed within the School of Engineering Design and Innovation.

Our mission aligns with PSU’s strategic plan to enhance student success, grow interdisciplinary research excellence, foster diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and grow our land grant impact.

Working at the interface of LPE, we aim to:

  • Educate, empower, and diversify the next generation of transdisciplinary scholars and practitioners

  • Foster engaged research, innovation and practice

  • Nurture a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just community

  • Advance transdisciplinary, sustainable solutions to complex problems in society

  • Enable a diverse, civic-scientific community and increase capacity for science and technology informed policy making

Why LPE?

The LPE is a convening platform for researchers to engage with stakeholders in policy and practice. From a Built Environment perspective, it will broaden the ways through which we can examine the linkages between building codes and market-based solutions.
